Did you know you need a barcode to sell music?

Updated: May 18, 2021

Barcodes to get your musical creation out and into the world.

Barcode resemblance. Horizontal black and white bars.

You have finally finished your album and now need to get it into retail and out to your audience.

The process is no different to getting any other product into retail/wholesale. All you will need is an EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode depending on where you intend to sell your album.

EAN-13 barcodes are used worldwide. They are the most common type of barcode in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa, in fact, everywhere in the world except in the USA where the UPC barcode is more commonly used. However, both versions can be read worldwide. Check with your intended retailer before making a final decision regarding which you should use.

In addition to physical CDs, digital platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Pandora and Amazon also require you to have a barcode for your digital albums, whether they are UPC-A or EAN-13. They are again used to track sales through these distribution channels.

If you are selling more than one music album, you will require a barcode for each CD as each product variation needs it's own unique barcode number. This is necessary so that prices are accurate for each product at the point of sale and inventory can be efficiently tracked. If you had two releases with the same barcode then the store would not know which to credit the sale to.

Barcode Ireland provides a dual package of EAN-13 and UPC-A barcodes for the price of one. Upon purchase you will receive via email your barcode number and images (JPEG and EPS) in both the EAN-13 and UPC-A formats.

At the time of printing you may choose to embed the image into your packaging or album cover design. Alternatively, you can print the images and numbers onto labels and affix to the CD.

These you will then give to your chosen retailers. They will enter the barcode number and product information into their inventories. Each time your CD is scanned at POS (Point of Sale) you will be credited with a sale.

If you want to sell your CD on online stores such as Amazon and Spotify, you will simply enter the EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode number into their online form when listing your product. Additionally, they will assign you an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number, a 10 character alphanumeric unique identifier for product information within amazon.com)

MUSICIANS MAY BE INTERESTED IN A UNIQUE MELD OF MUSIC, ART AND A BARCODE?

In wanting to combine his two passions, electronics and robotics, Moscow-based artist and self-taught engineer, Dimitry Morozov, released a barcode tattoo scanner that plays sounds upon decoding his 20.32cm by 7.62cm (8 inch by 3 inch) barcode tattoo. Morozov designed the tattoo himself and retrofitted a barcode scanner using a stepper motor and Nintendo Wii remote to guide the sensors along his arm. Not very melodic but certainly creative!
